Jeans are popularly made of denim these days but in 17th century Europe jean material and denim were very different. Jean material seems to have originated in Genoa, Italy, called “bleu de Genes” in French, and was woven from cotton or linen and sometimes blended with wool. Denim seems to have originated in France and England, named after Nimes, France, and generally called “serge de Nimes.” Unlike the jean fabric the early denim was woven of silk and wool. However, the denim fabric used a colored thread and a white thread in the weave, similar to today’s denim fabric, while the jean fabric used only colored threads.

As time went on the denim material evolved into a cotton twill weave instead of a wool blend, and it retained its characteristic colored warp thread and white fill thread. Its signature blue color became popular when indigo dye was used in the processing.

By the 18th century a sail cloth was being made at Dongari Killa near Mumbai, India. The cloth was a coarsely woven, undyed cotton fabric used by various naval sailing vessels. The cloth was often reused by sailors to make clothing such as overalls. Eventually the overalls and pants made from this material became known as dungarees.

In the 19th century the California Gold Rush gold miners needed strong pants that did not tear easily. Luckily, a Bavarian-born immigrant named Loeb Strauss obtained his American citizenship and journeyed to San Francisco. He changed his name to Levi and produced some sturdy pants for the gold miners. Eventually he reinforced the pockets and weak points of the pants with copper rivets. In 1873 Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received a patent for the copper rivet reinforcements and the pants now known as “levis” became popular among working men.

In the 1930’s and 1940’s denim pants grew in popularity. Cowboys gravitated toward them and movie cowboys especially looked good in them. Soldiers during World War II favored wearing denim pants when they were off duty. Factory workers during the era also preferred them. Following the war, rival companies like Wrangler and Lee began to challenge Levi Strauss for a share of the market.

In the 1950’s denim jeans became associated with rebellious young people. James Dean popularized them in the movie, “Rebel Without a Cause.” Because denim jeans were identified with non-conformity and rebellion, they were sometimes banned in schools, movie theatres, and restaurants.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s blue jeans became well accepted for casual wear and became part of general fashion. During the period different styles of jeans were created to match the imaginative fashions. For example, stone-washed jeans, embroidered jeans, painted jeans, and psychedelic jeans were a few of the styles that young people were buying from an increased number of manufacturers.

By the 1980’s and 1990’s famous designers entered into the market with their own styles and labels. Jeans entered the fashion market and the prices of the designer products went surprisingly high. Levi Strauss lost market share and had to close some of its factories. Also during this period other styles of pants such as khakis, chinos, and carpenter pants began to compete with traditional blue jeans.

Now into the 2000’s blue jeans survive as a utility pant for much of the population. It is said that the average American owns about seven pairs. On the other hand, however, denim pants have reached a new high in the fashion industry. There now seems to be no upper limit on the price that can be charged for a pair of ultra designer jeans. Big name designers have reinvented the top of the line fashion jeans.

Judging from the history of blue jeans there will continue to be innovations in styles and processing. There will undoubtedly be new applications of denim fabric as the material becomes useful in many other products. And undoubtedly there will be new styles of denim pants to attract us and make us look good.

Rises in jeans (the distance from the crotch to the waistband) range from the high-waisted to the superlow-rise. The latest in jeans fashion are the low-rise jeans. These have a deliberately low-cut waist intended to sit low on, or below, the hips. Also known as lowcut jeans, hipsters, hip-huggers and lowriders, they are intentionally cut lower on the waist, thus covering less body on front (the belly) and the back. Usually these jeans sit at least three inches lower than the belly button.

The “rise” of jeans is determined by the distance between the crotch and the waist and is usually around 10 inches on the regular conventional pants. In contrast, lowrise jeans typically have a rise of about 6 inches. Several brand manufacturers also highlight the feature by altering the rise of the zipper. They create pants with zippers far shorter than regular pants, usually between 2 and 3 inches, while some other manufacturers go to the extent of reducing the size of the zippers to1 inch , such as Dorinha Wear. The latter can also be classified as ultra lowrise jeans, and the small zipper no longer serves its traditional function, but rather becomes an embellishment and a display of fashion.

Although low-rise jeans came into existence as early as in the 1960s, their renewed popularity among young women, and the subsequent lower back tattoo trends they inspired, were one of the earliest phenomena that distinguished the popular fashion of the 2000s from that of the previous decade. Becoming aware that their underwear is no longer always hidden inside their pants, more people choose the underwear they wear more carefully, to show it off with their low-rise jeans. The thong is most in vogue as it is paired with the lowrise jeans by many. It exposes more skin than it covers and is worn more for fashion than as an article of utility. The conventional panty is also still worn regularly under the lowrise jeans. Another fashion trend is to wear no underwear at all.

Tattoos placed on the lower belly or back are very popular with wearers of low-rise jeans. While the regular above-the- navel pants would normally not have displayed a tattoo on those spots, it now becomes visible and also very attractive, especially when in a semi-revealed state.

The fashion trend of stretch, tight and low rise jeans has had its enemies. In 2003, Dr. Malvinder S. Parmar’s study revealed that wearing tight lowrise jeans puts unnecessary pressure on a sensory nerve, which can cause pain and paresthesia in the nerve’s area of distribution. This condition is known as Meralgia paresthetica and shows symptoms of a tingling or a burning sensation some of the thigh muscles. The problem with previously examined patients was resolved when they avoided wearing tight, low-rise jeans, and recovery took about 4 to 6 weeks.

Legislator Derrick Shepherd of the state of Louisiana in the USA made a futile attempt in 2004 to outlaw low-rise jeans, particularly to bring a halt to the display of underwear under the pants, claiming the trend to be obscene and disrespectful. He proposed that people who were caught with their underpants showing would be fined $500. However, thanks to popular dissent, this bill (HB 1703) was rejected by the Louisiana House and many people continue to enjoy this fashion statement.

Personally, I like denim jeans that are branded like Calvin Klein, Wrangler and Levi’s. These brands provide a whole range of different styles for me to choose from. Moreover, I never found it difficult to get the right fit every time I make my purchase of new jeans. I have a slim build with curves in all the right places; this is probably one of the reasons why.

But over and above that, comfort is utmost in my mind once I decide to buy a new pair.

Though I’m not particularly concerned about brands, Levi’s comes first in my list of priorities when choosing good, quality denims. For me, Levi’s is a phenomenon of the classic, authentic jeans which will forever be a part of our timeless thirst for fashion. New trends may be here today and gone tomorrow, but Levi’s will always appeal to the young and old alike.

I may sound a little bit exaggerating here, but it is undeniably the truth.
